Deep South Taco has partnered up with 42 North Brewing Company to produce a nice drinkable Mexican lager that will be available at the restaurant and the brewery. The first batch was tapped this evening by a couple of luchador wrestlers. On hand at the ceremony was 42 North Director of Recipe Development Alex Sowyrda and Chief Brewing Officer Clay Keel, as well as Deep South Taco owner Richard Hamilton.
The LuchaBrew is an amber lager brewed like the early Vienna-style beers first brewed by German expats in Mexico many years ago.
The relationship came to pass when the 42 North crew got together with Richard to discuss a custom brew for the restaurant. “We wanted a Mexican lager that would pair well with the food,” said Richard. “We’re very excited to have our own beer on tap at Ellicott Street Deep South Taco location. And soon on Hertel!”
Customers that tasted the beer agreed that it was very drinkable and should be a best seller at the restaurant. “Richard wanted something along the lines of Bohemia,’ said Alex. “It’s a malt-centric lager that pairs well with spicy and bold flavored food. You might say that it’s similar to a traditional Vienna lager, but somewhat lighter like a Mexican lager. It’s about 4.8% – easy drinking, but not boring.”
It boasts a nice balanced malt bill with some honey and caramel notes blended with the soft lemon-spice of German noble hops that finishes smooth and crisp.
It’s great to see more partnerships of this nature, between breweries and restaurants. “It’s our first commissioned beer,” said Clay. “We’re able to make it because it has similar ingredients as other beers that we make. It’s priced at $3 for a 12oz mug at the restaurant, which is a great price.”
Now that you’ve got the thirst for a beer that is endorsed by Santo and his cohorts, it’s time to come on down and taste test a new brew to Buffalo…. only at Deep South Taco.
