Deep South Taco is expected to open its doors in North Buffalo before Thanksgiving. That means that the restaurant will soon be up and operational with 98 full time employees (70 are currently in place). Owner Richard Hamilton is pleased with the progress that has been made thus far, and says that he can’t wait for the doors to open. “This was the first location that I intended to open,” he told me. “Then we got underway with the Downtown location instead, since the opportunity presented itself. Now we’re circling back to open this Hertel location, which will actually be bigger than the original. It’s also going to have a kid’s menu since we’re in more of a residential neighborhood setting.”
Another advantage of the North Buffalo location is that Richard was able to avoid a number of the development issues that he came across with the downtown location. For example, instead of adding temporary radiant heat towers, the ones on Hertel will be permanent and will help to heat up the patio better. That means that when the garage doors are open and the radiant heat flooring/towers are firing on all cylinders, the patio will allow guests to sit outside during the late fall and early spring (and maybe even some mild winter days). In the summertime, there will be water misters to cool down guests on the patio, along with an outdoor bar.
This Deep South Taco location will be the first restaurant in Buffalo to incorporate actual shipping containers into the design. The two shipping containers will allow for expanded seating. The shipping containers also add a fun design element to the project. An exterior living wall will face Hertel, which will buffer the street from the patio.
Other than that, a lot of what we see at the Downtown location will also be incorporated into the Hertel space. There will be an open window into the kitchen, killer lighting and sound, an outdoor video screen (see the uprights below), and a sizable bar area.
Guests to the restaurant can also expect the following:
- Taco Tuesday – All you can eat tacos OR buy one taco and get a second for a dollar
- Wednesday Artisan Enchiladas – The four versions are chicken, pork, cheese, and beef (only available on Wednesdays)
- Fajita Thursdays – Fajitas! (Only on Thursdays)
- Weekend brunch – Saturday and Sunday: 13 Mexican speciality dishes (egg dishes, breakfast tacos, French toast, etc.). An artisan mimosa program and specialty Bloody Marys
- Football Game Day NFL Special – Gordo Nacho! (Twice the size as normal)
- Daily – Lachabrew is a new craft brew partnership between 42North Brewery and Deep South Taco
It won’t be long before Deep South Taco lovers will be able to grab lunch, dinner and brunch in North Buffalo.
In the meantime, the Downtown location is celebrating its one-year birthday!
On Sunday, November 13, Deep South Taco will be hosting a birthday party celebration at its Ellicott Street location. On that day, deejays will be in-house between noon and 8pm. Every item on the menu (except pitchers and nacho platters) will be buy one and get the next one for a dollar. At 3pm there will be the World’s Hottest Taco Contest featuring a Scorpion Taco eating contest. This is the taco that can only be ordered after customers fill out a certificate that states that they take full responsibility for the high Scoville units. Then, at 5pm, there will be a lucharito eating contest. A lucharito is a is a giant smothered burrito that weighs 7 pounds. Add to that a nacho plate, and a contestant is looking at ten pounds of food. Good luck on that one. Finally, a luchador cake will be served up at 7pm. The event ends at 10pm.
