Fillmore Forward is hosting an inaugural Christmas in Wonderland at MLK Park. This is an exciting initiative that is long past due. MLK Park is the perfect place for an annual holiday celebration of this nature – but it would be even more perfect if the historic casino was open to the public. It would be so nice to see that building come back to life in 2017. Hopefully these types of events throughout the year spur the need for such an important public facility down the road.
In the meantime, there have been so many exciting investments at MLK Park over the years, which is one of the reasons that Fillmore Forward, along with JES Breathe Block Club, is hosting this inaugural holiday event. A few of the things to look forward to at the celebration include:
- A tree lighting with Crystal People-Stokes
- Carolers from around the neighborhood
- A snowy JES Jingle Roll with Slow Roll
- Ugly sweater contest
- Hot refreshments and food trucks
- Winter games
- Winter clothing drive
The better attended that this event is, the better it will be in years to come. These types of events are excellent ways to bring the community together to support our parks, and the neighborhoods that surround them. The more people that use the MLK Park in the winter (festivals, events, skating, etc.), the more the Olmsted Parks Conservancy and the City of Buffalo will work towards creating a year round destination. MLK Park already has the greatest ice rink in the city – it’s time to capitalize on that success story. Christmas in Wonderland is a good way to start.
