Key bike infrastructure has come to the Elmwood Village. Bike lanes can now be found on Bidwell Parkway, from Elmwood Avenue to Soldier’s Circle (both sides of the parkway). This is the first section of the parkway to get striped with bike lanes. Ultimately, the bike lane connectivity will extend to Colonial Circle, once additional paving is underway.
This is a significant improvement to bike-friendly improvements in the village. Once the lanes are extended to Colonial Circle, they will be connected to the ones that already exist on Richmond Avenue.
This green infrastructure sets a precedent for the rest of the parkways, which could all stand to see traffic calming of this nature. To date, cars have battled their way up and down the parkway streets, neck and neck. Now they will have to adhere to the new rules of the road. The cars will have to share the road with cyclists… cyclists that have been waiting for this day for a long time. There’s no reason to have two car lanes on a parkway of this nature.
This is another major step for bike infrastructure in Buffalo. A cyclist will soon be able to safely ride from Delaware Park to the Peace Bridge or even on to Canalside. Now that’s pretty exciting.
