Buffalo Rising

Trans Canada Trail is a Big Buffalo Benefit

The world’s longest car-free tail will be opening in Canada next year. Once open the Trans Canada Trail aka the Great Trail project will be just under 15,000 miles long. According to Inhabitat.com, 80% of Canada’s population lives within 30 minutes of the trail. The trail starts in Newfoundland (Kilometre Zero) and extends to British Columbia. Aside from cycling, the trail will also be open to hiking, paddling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, wheelchairs, etc.

From the looks of it, the trail dips all the way down to Buffalo. That’s pretty incredible, considering that the connectivity would give is access to all of the benefits by simply crossing the Peace Bridge into Canada. We are already incredibly lucky to have access to a splendid rails-to-trails corridor (the Friendship Trail) along Lake Erie, that extends all the way to Port Colborne to the West, and also connects to Niagara River Recreation Trail that leads to Niagara Falls. For those who have not cycled across, the Peace Bridge to take advantage of these assets, you must do so immediately. There is a whole other world awaiting, just minutes (by bike) from Allentown.

Seeing that a cyclist can be on these trails within minutes of crossing the Peace Bridge, Buffalo should be cross-promoting these unique recreational assets. Now, with additional connectivity to the Trans Canada Trail, Buffalo is sitting pretty as a starting point to some of the best cycling excursions in the world.
