Last week, I hinted at all of the great things to come on Amherst Street, coinciding with the arrival of Mark Madden and his tattoo enterprise. Not only will Madden be opening a tattoo/piercing studio on the street, he will also be bringing back a gallery element, which he believes will be the perfect fit in Maddrock (his version of Black Rock). Madden says that he is committed to helping bring energy to the street that he has come to appreciate for its mix of galleries, shops and restaurants. Madden is already planning his first events for the street, and hopes to create a synergy with other like-minded businesses.
On Saturday, October 22, Madd Grafix will be hosting its 14 Year Anniversary Party at its new Amherst Street location.
“Since setting up shop on Amherst Street, I’ve gotten to know a number of the local merchants,” said Madden. “There are great bars and restaurants here, and there’s also a thriving art community and now since 464 gallery has closed were looking to fill that much need space and showcase local talent . With the constant threat of closing our studio on Elmwood because a mixed-use development is scheduled to be built at the corner of Forest we are expanding to meet our clients needs. We wanted to stick close to Elmwood – Amherst street allowed us that opportunity. After spending some time in Black Rock (Maddrock) poking around and meeting business owners, this move made complete sense. Plus, we’re occupying the space of a former tattoo studio that was on its way out, which was perfect. Amherst Street is an up and coming street, that is close to Buff State. We are joining Sportsmens Tavern, Casey’s Tavern, Nick’s, The Dapper Goose, Wegmans, Artisan Kitchen & Bath, Artsphere, Rohall’s Corner, The Serendipity Shoppe, Barry’s, The Phoenix, Hot Mama’s, and others.”
Madden is teaming up with Agorie Headwear to throw a “pimp azz madd hatter” party, where everyone is invited to wear their favorite lids. The event will draw upon the talents of artist Chris Santoro from Retro Outlaw studios, with music by Cove Vito, and food by Osteria 166 and Mercato. Even Ashker’s will be opening its doors during the event. An afterparty will take place at Casey’s Tavern, hosted by Jolene Peñalvert and live music by The Poor Boys!
