My wife and I have been on the hunt for the best hummus and falafel in the city, and I think we may have found it. House of Hummus Café & Bakery aims to please, with just the right amount of Middle Eastern offerings. Owner Ahmad Hamideh has outdone himself, with menu items that are made with the best ingredients. Not only is this the best falafel that we have had in a long time, the presentation is also outstanding.
House of Hummus opened during The Italian Festival. Ever since, Ahmad has been dedicated to making outstanding hummus, shawarma, kebab, traditional salads, wraps and skewers. For lunch today, my wife ordered the chicken shawarma entrée. Every corner of the plate was filled with delectable food, all coming together to make a wonderful medley of flavors. The Middle Eastern style salad was tasty and refreshing. The hummus had perfect consistency and flavor. The Jasmine rice was surprisingly a big hit – it was very flavorful. And best of all, Ahmad presented us with a scratch jalapeño based hot sauce (when we asked for it) that completed the meal.
As a special surprise, Ahmad brought us a tasting of falafel for us to try. The falafel was crispy on the outside, and moist and tender on the inside. It was steamy when we cut into it. My wife couldn’t stop talking about it. The hummus was pleasantly balanced, with just the right amount of oil. It really was “All of the flavors of Old Jerusalem,” featured in a pleasant little restaurant in North Buffalo.
Surprisingly, a Philly cheese steak hoagie made it onto the menu. I asked Ahmad what that was doing there, along with everything else. “Everyone has one of those friends,” he told me. “If I can get them through the door, chances are that they will try something else. I have so many repeat customers who come in almost every single day because they love the food so much.”
Other things to note at House of Hummus: It’s vegan friendly, there is a patio, traditional music plays (adding to authenticity), there is a recycle bin, hookahs are available, substitutions are OK, it’s attached to Jerusalem Halal Market (different owner – great Middle Eastern shopping), there are spinach pies and baklava, and there are toothpick containers on every table!
