At 4pm today (Tuesday, September 13), Buffalonians will be rallying in front of HSBC Bank at 95 Washington Street, demonstrating against the bank’s funding of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The peaceful rally is being organized by Honor the Earth, Indigenous Environmental Network, Sierra Club, 350.org, CREDO, and BOLD Alliance.
We demand to HSBC and US government to respect Indigenous Sovereignty of the Standing Rock Sioux and honor the Fort Laramie Treaty.
The proposed 1,172-mile, 30-inch diameter pipeline, with a capacity to transport 570,000 barrels per day, would be shipped from Bakken and Three Forks to Illinois. The route positions the pipeline to travel directly through Native American’s sacred land.
To date, HSBC Bank has contributed 189 million dollars to fund DAPL. Those at the rally will be calling for HSBC to divert further funds from massive fossil fuel projects such as this. The group intends to point out the benefits of future investments in sustainable energy alternatives.
Water is life and you can’t drink oil.
Today is a national day of action, with anti-pipeline groups rallying across the nation.
