Bharata Natyam – For New Audiences

This coming weekend, Indian dance enthusiast Gaitrie Devi (Devi Bollywood Dance) will be hosting a special guest who will be performing and guiding instructional workshops on Bharata Natyam (South Indian classical dance).

In order to introduce more Buffalonians to Indian dance and culture, instructor Gaitrie Devi continues to host dance sessions, workshops, events, lessons and performances throughout Buffalo. Gaitrie first started teaching Bollywood Dance in Buffalo back in 2013. In a previous BRO article, she described Bollywood Dance as “…a combination of Bhangra (a high energy form of dance originating from Northern India) Garba (which originates from the villages of Gujrat) and Classical dance, the murdras (hand gestures), facial expressions and footwork are key to this particular style (Bharatanatyam and Kathak).”

On Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25, Gaitrie will be hosting a very special guest at the New Ashker’s on Main Street (still under development). Her guest is Mr. Freeman, who will be performing and teaching traditional southern Indian dance, which is the foundation of all dance forms from India – including Bollywood. The two day event series is titled Bharata Natyam for New Audiences.

The program will feature items of the Bharta Natyam repertoire with an interactive dialogue with the audience throughout a whirlwind of stories and rhythm.

“Guests can expect to see a beautiful Indian classical dance performance followed by an answer/question portion for audience members,” says Gaitrie. “Mr. Freeman has been performing this style of dance for audiences for many years around the world – hoping to educate, showcase and give background on this art form. Devi Bollywood Dance is excited to host Mr. Freeman as he returns to Buffalo with his Bharata Natyam – For New Audiences.”
