Five Points Bakery has taken bike-friendliness to the next level. Instead of simply installing bike racks outside of their business, they have literally dedicated a small building to cyclists that frequent the bakery/café. They call it The Bikery.
I spoke to co-owner Kevin Gardner last evening at the Meditative Energy Garden, located next to The Bikery. I told him that I assumed that the bike storage building would be temporary until he could find a permanent tenant for the building. He responded by saying that he was actually quite pleased with the way the bike resource turned out, and was going to keep it and expand upon it. I thought that that was a great idea.
In the future, not only would The Bikery be a safe storage area for cyclists, it might be a place to fix a flat tire. Already there is a tire pump inside, which is super handy for cyclists on the West Side. It’s also a great place for cyclists to get out of the rain.
The exterior wall of The Bikery doubles as a patio wall, creating a little enclave detached from the main building. The little enclave is very forward thinking in the way that it was designed. This is something that you might expect to see in the Southwest – there’s a calm and tranquility that is completely captivating.
Everything faces the main building, creating a sort of social gathering place for visitors who have come to appreciate all of the Five Points offerings – the coffee, the Toast Bar, the patio, The Bikery and the temporary Meditative Energy Garden. The owners of Five Points Bakery are always up to something. I love the organic way that everything is unfolding.
