Now that Solar City and Tesla have essentially joined forces, it’s time to unleash a new arsenal of products. Chairman Elon Musk has announced that the company will be switching directions when it comes to solar power and rooftops. Instead of simply installing roof modules, the plan is to manufacture complete solar roofing products. According to electrek.co, two new products will be unveiled by the end of the year, which is when the two companies are scheduled to tie the knot.
With 5 million roofs installed each year, the company sees a major opportunity to flex some muscle. It will be interesting to see exactly what Musk and company are coming up with. For years, there have been talks of introducing futuristic products such as Solar Paint to the housing market. This new plan would be some sort of hybrid of roofing and solar panel products, where the roofing material acts as the solar panel.
It is anticipated that the new green roof components would be manufactured in Buffalo, with a second quarter 2017 release.
