If you grew up in the city, then you probably know a few families that moved away from the West Side. Recently, West Side Community Services (WSCS) has been working on ways to strengthen the West Side, along with other groups, to create livable neighborhoods that are safe, diverse and fulfilling. These days, the West Side is experiencing an incredible rebirth. Those who once lived on the West Side are invited to return to see all of the projects underway. Those who are new to the West Side are also welcome to call these rebounding neighborhoods “home”.
We See Community Strength.
Now the WSCS is embarking on a project that will hep to showcase the neighborhoods that they have been supporting. On Sunday, October 9, the inaugural ‘Come Home to the West Side 5K’ will be held. Leading up the race, a community-oriented art competition will be underway to procure a locally printed, unique race shirt. The proceeds from the race will be directed to enhancing WSCS initiatives, including:
- After school enrichment for at risk kids
- Evidence-based prevention technology
- Event rental space
- Extended hours enrichment for at-risk teens
- Health & wellness center benefits
- Innovative & positive alternatives to crime
- West Side Seniors (senior socialization & transportation)
See Facebook for details on the t-shirt competition, including entry deadline. Race starts at 8am at 161 Vermont Street, and is held on the West Side.
Stay tuned to www.wscsbuffalo.org for race details.
