On Sunday, August 21, Canalside is going to the dogs. On that day, from 12pm to 5pm, NYS Citizens Against Puppy Mills will be promoting a massive adoption event, where the community will be able to do its part to rescue animals while raising awareness of the ever problematic puppy mill industry. These mills don’t have the interest of the dogs in mind. Rather they are all about the bottom line.
Pet owners are encourage to NOT bring their own dogs to this event, as it will be stressful for myriad reasons. At the same time, supporters of this cause are encouraged to bring cans of dog and cat food for the Pet Food Pantry. Some of the food will also be provided for homeless pet owners who cannot feed their animals.
Visitors to the event can expect to find a number of rescue opportunities, including dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, and little critters. This is a family friendly event that is counting on members of the community to consider adopting homeless animals, sign up to foster, or donate. If nothing else, please spread the word. I’m going to bring my mother-in-law who has been talking about adopting a dog. Who do you know that is need of a four-legged friend? These animals are counting on us. This event will be instrumental in raising awareness of myriad issues, while offering opportunities to alleviate the logjam of pets searching for homes.
Along with vendors, live music, a balloon man, etc., acclaimed rock photographer Gus Griesinger, founder of Backstageaxxess, will be selling photos (silent auction) from his personal collection. Photos include images of Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, Atom Keiser of Cinderella, Brett Michaels of Poison, Paul Rodgers of Bad Company, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, blues guitarist Buddy Guy, Zack Wylde of Black Label Society, rock legend Alice Cooper, and Sully Erna of Godsmack. All of the money raised at the event will go towards Citizens Against Puppy Mills.
