Adding to all of the excitement along Niagara Street, Sugar City (DIY Collective) is in the process of undergoing a facade improvement. According to the collective, “[The work is] part of an ongoing residing project and bringing back the windows that were a part of the upper apartment.”
It’s funny to look back at the deplorable state of this building, before Sugar City started setting up shop in August 2014.
Now, after fixing up the inside of the building, work is commencing on the outside. Coincidentally, the work coincides with Sugar City’s Two Part Anniversary Party, which is set to take place on Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 6pm to 1pm. The first part of the event will be held at Sugar City. The second part will be held at Resurgence Brewery, across the street. In typical Sugar City fashion, the date of the anniversary party does not directly correlate with the reopening of the DIY collective, but sometimes it’s simply easier to go with the flow than trying to be on target with an exact date.
Let’s be clear. This date makes no sense. We had the opening of our first space (in Allentown) on January 9, 2009 but January is too cold. We faked you out by having our grand opening of our current space on August 15, 2014. We were given our live music license on March 6th, 2015 but who wants to wait a few more months. What does make sense is that since legally opening in 2015 Sugar City has hosted a rough estimate of 225 events! No doubt this particular event is going to be an awesome evening of art, music, and dancing all in the semi-annual tradition of Sugar City’s Two-Part Parties. Let’s celebrate together as we hit the half way mark in year two at our new space and look towards the future!

Art Opening 6PM From Your Collection: a collaborative group show. We believe that everyone owns a piece of creative work that has value. For the second time Sugar City is setting out to provide a public platform to share these treasures by conducting an open call for contributions. We are always open to different interpretations of “art” and this exhibition follows the Sugar City do-it-together ethos. Items were collected 7/15-7/19. The only rule was that the piece cannot be something the contributor created. Let us do away with the mystery of where art comes from and what authority assigns value and celebrate the art that we each have.
Music gets underway at 7pm. Not in order of appearance but by order of the alphabet:
Basement Rat (raucous bilingual lady-punk, Buffalo)
Chevron Bloom (psychedelic pop, Buffalo)
Glove (unhinged noise punk, Buffalo)
Jason Martin Power Animal System Methods (species and gender queer art pop tunes, capitol region)
