Food Truck Thursdays is a big hit at Niagara Square. Earlier today I was over checking out the new bike lanes that were added to Niagara Street when I noticed a commotion at the square. At first I thought that it was The Taste of Buffalo setting up. But then I saw all of the food trucks, and all of the people. I suddenly realized that it was Food Truck Thursdays at The Square.
For years we have been talking about placemaking exercises such as this. What did it take? Food trucks that are already bountiful in the city, and open minds that saw potential. For the first time, this central core of downtown Buffalo was a happening place to be, without a major event underway.
In order to capitalize on this further, the city should put out some nice tables and chairs (not the plastic stuff). Yes, there is some bench seating along the perimeter of the square, and built into the fountain, but to create a true piazza feel, there is just one missing element. Actually, two missing elements if you think the addition of some street musicians is a good idea. Congratulations to City Hall for pulling this one out of its hat. Seeing all of the activity in a square that is usually pretty ‘deadsville’ made my day.
