A free wheeling arts program has rolled into Canalside. Sponsored by KeyBank, the Art Space ‘art cart’ allows visitors to engage in artistic projects whenever the fancy strikes. The cart is located atop the Lloyd Street Bridge, where anyone can access it with ease. Art Space is available every Friday through Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm. During the week, there are free art classes held, for those who might need additional inspiration from a practiced hand.
“The Art Space is yet another fun activity that families can put on their ‘Canalside to-do list’ for the summer, “said Robert Gioia, Chairman, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation. “The art cart will provide a way for visitors to make their own artistic souvenirs while being inspired by Canalside’s favorite art installations including Shark Girl, the Talking Poets and the new Cool Globes exhibit.”
A number of art organizations and individuals have been enlisted to engage the public with projects, including Paint the Town, B.Inspired Social Crafting, Imperfectly Beautiful Designs, Makers Buffalo, Studio Hue, Pinot’s Palette and a member of the University at Buffalo Art School. All of the classes and materials are free.
“At Key, we believe the arts not only enriches lives, it also breaks down barriers and promotes the learning and cultural diversity our communities need to become stronger,” said Gary Quenneville, New York regional executive and Buffalo Market president, KeyBank. “This is why we are proud to sponsor Art Space at Canalside. These free art classes are a fun, meaningful way to engage the community in the arts.”
In order to reserve a spot in one of the all-ages scheduled classes, people are encouraged to sign up online. Otherwise they can simply stop by to check on availability.
In the future, Art Space @ Canalside will complement the new children’s museum nicely. The more family oriented activities the better, especially when it comes to opening the creative minds of people who might typically be expecting to find dumbed down attractions at the waterfront.
