It was only recently that Buffalo began to celebrate 716 Day. It’s such a no brainer for a celebration, that it’s a surprise that it didn’t get off the ground sooner. After a couple of years of small parties and events, it looks as if 2016 is the year that this event really takes off.
Labatt USA is planning on hosting The Labatt Undomesticated Games at Wilkeson Pointe on 716 – July 16. It’s one of the many events scheduled to be held at this new Outer Harbor playground. The Labatt Undomesticated Games is a kind of offshoot of the Labatt Pond Hockey – a summer version you might say. Activities at the games will include Human Bowling, Oversized Slingshot and Keg-O-War. These types of adult slapstick games encourage plenty of partying, and the new beer garden – called ‘The Pointe‘ – is the perfect place to host these sort of playful beer-oriented activities (10am to 9pm).
Guests to the events will also find live music, volley ball courts, kayak and biking opportunities, Adirondack chairs, a passive beach, bike trails… and get this: visitors can take the Metro Rail to the Inner Harbor, jump on a ferry to the Outer Harbor, rent a bike or kayak, and enjoy everything there is to offer. Pretty cool.
Here’s a breakdown of the games (view course):
· Human Bowling – Pin it to win it. Jump in and turn yourself into a human bowling ball, just like the Labatt Blue commercial. Knock down as many pins as possible to score points.
· Oversized Slingshot – Teams takes aim with a bear-sized slingshot at a series of targets. Each team’s crew needs to relay the balls back to the slingshot to get off as many chances as possible before time runs out.
· Roller Dash – In a game of who wants it more, teams faceoff directly. Featuring groups of three, teams must out-hustle their opponents to gather as many balls as possible to win.
· Undomesticated Challenge – Teams must weave their way through a series of six obstacles with a slip and slide finish. Teams can’t miss a step through this relay or they’ll will lose points.
· Keg-O-War – It’ll take total teamwork to move four kegs of varying weights across the finish line. The faster the time, the more points earned.
The games will consist of 75 teams, made up of 450 people (teams are already in place for 2016). Fans can come down and cheer on their favorite teams, while listening to music, playing backyard games, and drinking some ice cold Blues.
“We hope to draw thousands of people to Buffalo Outer Harbor to participate in our Undomesticated Games,” said Lisa Texido, brand manager for Labatt. “We did a dry run with our local employees and we had a ton of fun watching as people transformed into human bowling balls, played with huge sling shots and dragged kegs to outpace their opponents. This is ridiculous fun at its best.”
