Groundwork Market Garden (GWMG) is on the hunt for a hoop house. The urban farm, which was featured on BRO in February (see here), is hosting an event called Party in the Park, in order to raise funds that will ultimately lead to the raising of a hoop house on the city’s East Side.
A hoop house is essentially a DIY year round climate controlled greenhouse that resembles a small airplane hangar, similar to ones that are currently found on the West Side (Massachusetts Avenue Project for example). The hoop house allows urban gardeners and farmers to raise produce without worrying about various weather conditions. The structures trap the heat from the sun inside, which extends the growing season. They also keep the birds and the critters from eating the crops.
Party in the Park falls on Earth Day, Friday, April 22, 2016 at 6pm. The event is being held at the Marcy Casino, 199 Lincoln Parkway in Delaware Park. On that day, there will be food, beer, wine, DJs, live music, raffles and lawn games. Tickets are $30 ($40 at the door), which gets supporters ten tickets toward food and drinks.
The fundraising initiative goes hand-in-hand with GWMG’s crowdfunding initiative on GoFundMe. To purchase tickets to the event, visit EventBrite. Also find the Party in the Park event on Facebook. Stay tuned to happenings at GWMG on their Facebook page, or at this website.
