MAP Mobile Market Rolls Out

Throughout the summer Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP) operates a fresh produce delivery truck that tends to underserved communities. The truck brings healthy food options to ‘food desserts’ throughout the city. This year, the truck will roll into the following six communities: Ellicott, Fillmore, Masten, Niagara, and University Districts. The neighborhood hosts that have partnered with MAP, ensuring that the truck finds proper berth are: Elim Christian Fellowship, Gerard Place, Mulberry Street Block Club (at Moot Community Center), The Salvation Army, and West Side Community Services.

In 2015, the Mobile Market served over 4,000 consumers and distributed 30,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to individuals,  families and seniors.

Not only does MAP deliver healthy, locally grown foods to deserved communities, the organization also ensures that the prices of the goods are affordable, and that low income residents that rely on financial benefit programs such as SNAP (EBT), WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program checks, and Double Up Food Bucks program (provided by The Field and Fork Network) are able to procure the foods that they need.

In order to provide the amount of produce needed to fulfill the demands, MAP has teamed up with supplemental farms such as Oles Family Farm in Alden, NY and Little Bear Farm in Farmersville, NY. What MAP is not able to grow on the West Side of Buffalo comes from these other local farms.

Aside from The Mobile Market, MAP also sets up a seasonal Market Stand in front of its own urban farm on Massachusetts Avenue, thus allowing all West Siders access to healthy produce.

The Mobile Market operates on a weekly basis, from June until November. Along with wholesome foods, MAP also provides its customers with healthy recipes, storage and cooking pointers, and even offers up nutrition information thanks to a partnership with Eat Smart New York.

More information about MAP’s Mobile Market can be found on MAP’s website.
