For nineteen years running, the Parkside Community Association has been organizing an event that invites people to explore the magical surroundings of ‘a suburb’ that was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1870. Touring the Parkside neighborhood, with its celebrated houses and vibrant gardens, is a real treat. Bounded by Hertel, Delaware Park, and the future Scajaquada Boulevard, the Parkside neighborhood is positioned to become a premier residential locale on all levels.
Aside from being proud of the homes, there’s something to be said about introducing one’s neighborhood to others by simply inviting them in to see what it’s all about. The houses and gardens in the Parkside neighborhood are striking, and live up to all expectations.
During the event, tourists will also be able to explore one of the premiere architectural treasures in the world – the Darwin Martin House complex (free tours of the Martin House conservatory). One of the next restoration phases is currently underway. This phase deals with the Wright-designed landscape that once boasted a historic greenhouse. Historic images will be on display in the modern visitor’s center that was designed by architect Toshiko Mori. Also, horticulturist Nellie Gardner will be in attendance to answer questions about the historic ground’s restoration project, making this year’s tour a very special occasion indeed.
19th Annual Parkside Garden and Architecture Tour
Sunday, June 26th from 10 am to 4 pm
The tour begins outside of the historic Church of the Good Shepherd, 96 Jewett Parkway, across the street from the Darwin Martin House complex. A full color map and garden directory will be available for $5 on the day of the tour. The maps will direct you to the highlighted gardens and “Parkside Architecture Notes” will be posted throughout the neighborhood, pointing to design elements of our homes. For those wishing to further explore this historic Fredrick Law Olmsted-designed neighborhood, there will be guided walking tours highlighting architectural styles and elements interspersed with local Gilded Age residents’ history and folklore. Sign up on the day of the Tour for this limited enrollment tour for $10, on a first-come, first-served basis.
