The community is invited to attend the opening of a new gallery called Paper Moon at 497 Franklin Street. Owner-operators Laura Borneman and Michael Pijanowski are committed to showcasing local and national artists in the best possible light. At the same time the owners will open their doors as an interactive art studio for children and adults.
Often times, gallery spaces are underutilized when there is not a show underway, or during hours when the space is not open to the viewing public. It’s at these times that Paper Moon will transition into a place that is full of life, with people attending classes and workshops.
It was back in 2014 when BRO first covered Borneman’s return to Buffalo, upon which time she immediately opened an art studio in North Buffalo. After acclimating a bit, networking, and showing around town, she is now taking her next leap into gallery ownership. Along with Pijanowski, the two have found the perfect home for their artistic passions. Pijanowski has spent a lot of time in numerous foodie circles around town, while honing his own art skills as a painter and a writer.
Back in the day, Borneman and Pijanowski were good friends at Buffalo State. When Borneman returned to Buffalo, the two rekindled their friendship. After attending a number of recent gallery openings (solo and together), a window opened to take over the defunct TGW @ 497. Pijanowski jumped on the opportunity and then called Borneman to tell her about his new venture, and her role in it. The two are setting out on their own, bringing their own artistic flair to Allentown. Their inaugural show is coming up on April 1.
Opening reception: April 8, 2016 | 6:00 to 9:00 pm
Inaugural Group Show | April 1 to April 30, 2016 | 11am to 5pm
The inaugural group show will feature the following artists:
Barbara Buckman works with traditional drawing and painting media. Her compositions are developed by manipulating painterly elements and variables, adding and subtracting, weighing and balancing portions and passages.
Peter Fowler promises to show “new work and a surprisingly small dog.”
Michael Pijanowski’s paintings use bright, dancing colors that evoke lyrical landscapes reminiscent of impressionism and abstract expressionism.
Jody Selin’s work is developed through a process of laying down imagery of form and color drawn from daily life and memories. Each new surface and material — canvas, paper, pencil, inks, oils and alkyds — is approached individually with the idea of discovery, revealing multiple layers, textures and subtleties.
Richard Rockford (inset) is a self-taught artist with experience appreciating old objects and surfaces for over 45 years. His work involves rescuing old things with patina, color, form, and design.
