The University Heights Arts Association is launching a terrific program that offers free access to art in public locations. It will launch in the Buffalo on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at West-Herr Toyota Scion of Williamsville. The project combines art and learning with a mission of increasing accessibility to art which is often limited by financial constraints, especially in underserved populations.
The ARTcovz project places booths stocked with single art lessons along with supplies around Western New York such as community centers, homeless shelters, waiting rooms, schools, and parks. ARTcovz is part of the ARTboothz program of the University Heights Arts Association which served 2,427 people of all ages in 2015 at farmer’s markets, festivals, community centers, and special events throughout Western New York.
The self-serve booths offer free art kits that contain a lesson and supplies which range from paper, origami paper, pencils, crayons, erasers, markers, paint brushes, water color paints, and polymer clay. The kiosk also holds soft clay projects along with books, CD’s to include literary and music which are also free.
The slot at the bottom that can be used to leave completed work for upcoming competitions and/or donations. Each self-serve booth is designed to accommodate the host location, such as the one at the Western New York Western New York Independent Living- Genesee in Batavia (unveiled in February) which was designed for people with disabilities. An art therapist was also consulted with for this location to offer guidance on projects that would be appropriate and enjoyable.
Building unique community partnerships is a parallel mission of the program. Ideal partnerships include artist who can provide an art lesson guide, musicians who would like to donate CD’s, builders who can help assemble the self-serve booths, donations of supplies, sponsors, host locations and any financial support to help keep art in our community and offer free access to everyone where art would benefit daily life.
