Just the other day Sean Kennedy of Farm2Curb came across a large silver maple tree on West Avenue. The tree was being tapped by 5 Loaves Farm, in preparation for an upcoming neighborhood pancake breakfast. This morning, another neighbor sent me a reminder that the farm’s pancake breakfast was coming up on Saturday, March 19. The community is invited to attend this wholesome breakfast, which helps to support 5 Loaves Farm initiatives, including maple tree sugaring and increased urban farming efforts.
The event on the 19th is to promote awareness of permaculture and galvanize support for various community-based projects, i.e. food forests throughout the city.
Sean shared with me that Matt Kauffman of 5 Loaves Farm and Buffalo Vineyard Church continues to increase his yield, by growing his farming practice into multiple lots with numerous CSA shares. The farming initiative has also branched off into various other types of “sustainable market gardens” as we can plainly see by the presence of the maple sugaring operation.
It’s these types of all natural and neighborly food sourcing efforts that we should all get behind. The benefits are limitless, and everyone is invited to reap the rewards.
