On Saturday, January 16, Buffalonians will attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Record for the longest ice-skating line. That means that 600 people will have to sign up (and show up) in order to break the record. Once gathered at Canalside, the participants will be asked to form a continuous line that will ultimately reach 400 meters in length. The length of the human ice skating chain is a little less than a quarter of a mile.
Over the years, Buffalo has built the world’s largest ice maze (Powder Keg Festival), broken the lowest limbo record (Shemika Charles), and this past summer beat the world record for most push ups (Jeffrey Warrick). Also, Dave Farrow holds the world record for the most decks of playing cards memorized in a single sighting (see here). This city holds the record for The World’s Largest Disco. Buffalo is also home to the man who broke the world record for possessing the largest video game collection (Michael Thomasson).
Now it’s time for Buffalonians to lace up their skates and beat another record. If you can make it on Saturday (must have your own skates), then click this link and look for “participant registration”. Also stay tuned to Facebook.
Requirements for participants:
• Must be at least 13 years of age
• Must be a strong skater – able to skate 400 meters and remain in an unbroken, continuous chain
• Must have your own skates (skate rental will not be available day of event)
• Must be in line and ready to enter the ice between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. – the attempt begins promptly at 8 a.m.
• Registration opens at 7 a.m.
Donations to benefit Make-A-Wish Western New York are suggested pre-event, and during event.
Hot chocolate will be provided to registered skaters. Food and beverages will be available for purchase to spectators. Street parking is available, but limited (take the Metro Rail).
