Proponents of Buffalo keeping the drinking establishment closing time at 4am have started an online petition. The petition gives a voice to those who feel that the decision to close bars at 2am is being made by a select few, rather than the WNY citizenry as a whole.
Buffalo has come to be known as a city where the fun rolls into the early hours of the morning. Now a group of self-appointed decision makers, many of whom spent their fair share of hours partying out at bars well past 2am when they were younger, want to roll back the clocks. By doing so, they would be taking away something that has become synonymous with this fun-loving party city.
What is especially unfair is the way that this is being handled. Instead of a democratic process, the 4am plug could simply be pulled because a few people feel that this city should “grow up”. Why, all of a sudden, is this an issue? That’s what a lot of people are asking these days.
Just as we are starting to get our mojo back as a city, there are those who feel that they know best when it comes to how late we should stay out. For generations Buffalonians have been working things out for themselves and creating a city where we want to live and play. Buffalonians work hard and play hard – it’s what we’re known for. So far, all we have heard is that it’s time to close at 2am – no real reasoning, other than some people think that it’s a good idea. Well, that’s not good enough.
This city can’t even figure out how to get Uber here. Let’s focus on the real issues instead of messing around with the Buffalo institutions that are working.
If you want the bar hours to stay as they are, consider signing this petition.
