On Thursday, September 24 at 5:00pm, a faction of the community will be gathering together at Niagara Square to show their support for Climate Justice. There is a pre-rally scheduled for 4pm that includes live music, performances, installations and poetry. Then at 5pm, speakers will spell out their thoughts on climate change that we are seeing across the globe, and the natural disasters that are rearing up. In California, the droughts are so extensive that fresh water aquifers are collapsing. Some families are starting to store fresh water supplies in their houses, in preparation for increasingly bad news.
Pope Francis will be speaking before congress on the 24th as well. The Rise Up for Climate Change rally coincides with the Pope’s speaking engagement. Rally organizers and supporters are pushing for world leaders to take stronger positions when it comes to the environment and climate action.
The United Nations Climate Change conference is scheduled to be held in Paris from November 30 to December 11, 2015. It is said that this is one of the most critical moments that the earth and its inhabitants will face, as many of the future climate policies for the world’s nations will essentially be forged by the resulting determinations.
Speakers at the Niagara Square rally include Darius G. Pridgen, Buffalo Common Council President, Senator Marc Panepinto, Dr. Alan Lockwood, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Sharon Goodremote who will bring a message from Bishop Malone, Deborah Hayes, Area Director, Communications Workers of American District, Lynda Schneekloth, Chair, Sierra Club Niagara Group, WNY Interfaith Climate Justice Community Coalition, PUSH Buffalo, and the Seneca Nation.
