With the current hot topic in WNY revolving Verizon FiOS and the lack of fiber options in the city I think I am wondering if Google Fiber was ever considered? There are plenty of “hip, up and coming” cities a few years ahead of Buffalo like Austin, Raleigh, etc. that are on the list to get the service.
Instead of complaining about Verizon, we should be asking our government why the real competition is not [still] sought out (see Mayor’s bid for Google Fiber in 2010). Verizon in the city won’t lower prices from Time Warner Cable – just ask anyone in the suburbs who get to choose. Google has created real competition, causing ISPs to raise their offerings and lower the costs.
If Buffalo wants to be a leading tech city (see 43 North) then having the right infrastructure will become a necessity.
Somebody should continue to ask the question, “Where is Google Fiber!?”
