This past Wednesday the Karibu newspaper launched as a multilingual publication that focuses on the refugee and immigrant community of Buffalo’s east and west sides. “Karibu” is a Swahili term that means “Welcome.”
The objective is to integrate the refugee and immigrant communities with the local community. With the ever growing ethnic population in WNY, it is increasingly important for locals to become acquainted with their migrant neighbors and educate themselves on the eclectic mix of culture, religion and tradition surrounding them. Other goals of the publication are to provide news and information in other languages such as Burmese and Arabic, that way the people of these communities who cannot yet speak or read English will be able to read local news relevant to them in their language. It is important to discuss issues, concerns and events that the community wants to hear.
The folks over at the newspaper are open to inquires, suggestions and articles. For more information, contact the Managing and Publishing Editor, Rubens Mukunzi via karibunews@gmail.com or (716) 536-6617. They’re also looking for additional businesses and meeting places to distribute the paper so be sure to reach out if you want it!
