This Sunday, the International Institute of Buffalo (IIB) is hosting a “celebration of citizenship” called New Citizens Day. The celebration is in recognition of Buffalo’s many new citizens who have joined our ranks since the year 2000.
As we watch our cultural landscape continue to evolve, we must set aside a time to step back and think about the hardships that have been overcome by those who struggled and persevered to gain their deserved rights to become American citizens. These are the people who are helping to create a diverse, culturally significant city, which for many years remained stagnant.
The IIB has been working with immigrant and refugee populations since 1932. Now it is bringing back a ceremony and tradition that puts everything into perspective. America has been, and will always be, a melting pot, comprised of people from myriad countries, many of which are oppressive and war torn.
Now it’s up to us to welcome these new Buffalonians into our neighborhoods, so that they may share in many of the opportunities that we take for granted.
