The Fight Is Not Over: Promoting HIV Education @ 23rd AIDS Walk

With two days left until the big fundraising event, supporters of the AIDS Walk have raised $78,894 of the $80,000 goal. The theme of this year’s walk is The Fight Is Not Over, as there are still ongoing AIDS/HIV issues that must be dealt with on a regular basis, including medical care, counseling, housing assistance, and providing nutritious meals to those afflicted with the syndrome. The AIDS Walk is just one way that the community can help, by raising awareness of the issue, along with funds needed to support those in need.

“We’ve created an interactive timeline to show milestones of the AIDS crisis, and we’ve left room for walkers to add their personal stories” said Event Coordinator Christopher Reybrouck. “We want to celebrate how far we’ve come, but make it known that there is still work to do. There’s been a rise in new HIV diagnoses –even with new prevention strategies becoming available– and that’s mostly because of decreases in awareness and education.”

The money raised at this year’s walk is helping to build Evergreen’s primary care practice and Wellness Center (see here).

“All of the money raised at this event will directly benefit the quality of life for HIV positive people in Western New York,” said Reybrouck.
