Fun in the Falls: Block Party to Celebrate Progress on Third St on May 24th

Block Parties signal summer in the neighborhood. Each block party is special, as a reflection of that specific place and the people who live there. Downtown Niagara Falls welcomes millions of visitors from around the globe each year. At the same time, there is a growing effort to make the downtown core a place for both locals and visitors to come together for a unique experience, as well as a launching pad into the rest of Niagara Falls. The Third Street Block Party on May 24, 2015 is a way to offer local flavor to the world and hopefully the start of a new tradition.

Zak Ward, a Niagara Falls native, will kick-off the day and will be performing  in the 400 Block parking lot (next to 444 Third Street) from 2 to 4 pm. Erin Sydney Welsh will play the Third Street Tap Room from 3 to 5 pm.  SnobKnockers will play outside Wine on Third at 5 pm. Throughout the day, visitors can check out the brand new 24 Below Art Gallery & Café, grab a pint at the Third Street Tap Room, stop by Zaika Indian Cuisine, Wine on Third or the Pizza Bistro, or just hang out and play outdoor yard games in the 400 Block Parking Lot. The idea is to bring people together through music and community, and to offer them something that cannot be recreated somewhere else.

Local developers have been renovating mixed use buildings along Third Street recently, converting long term vacancy to market rate apartments and new storefronts. It is a welcome and necessary change. Month after month, small improvements continue to build on each other. A contractor working on a façade. An artist painting a fire hydrant. A wall mural with a wheat-pasted dare-devil.  A new resident moving in. Live music at Wine on Third. An art gallery and café opens. Now, a local block party. A vibrant neighborhood is not born over night. It also cannot be manufactured with plans and renderings. In a way, the authenticity of a neighborhood needs to be cultivated on its own, and then only survives with years of support.
