A few weeks ago I wrote about an AlleyCat Bike Race to benefit Buffalo Gamelan World Music Club (see here). Since that time I have been in contact with the coordinator of the event, and have learned additional information on the aspirations of event organizers. “I’ve lived in Buffalo for about two years now,” says Matt Dunning. “Before that I lived in Indonesia for several years playing traditional gamelan music and making documentary films. When I left Indonesia, I left with a wealth of knowledge and experience that I would love to share with Buffalo. Gamelan music is really amazing stuff. It’s community oriented, fun for all ages and musical skill levels to get into. Usually about 15 or 20 people play the instruments at the same time.”
In order to get gamelan going in Buffalo, Matt needs to make certain a few things happen. First of all, he needs his instruments, which he is planning on shipping from Indonesia. The endeavor is not a cheap one, which is why it is so important that the upcoming bike event, Buffalo Jaunt Quest, is well attended. “Currently, I work at a bike shop here in Buffalo,” Matt explains. “And that being my second passion, on May 23rd I’m organizing a fun bike ride/scavenger hunt to help fund the shipping. It’s a kind of a wacky alleycat with checkpoints throughout the city. Great prizes from lots of local sponsors, and a great party at Nickel City Housing Coop after, with locally brewed beer and music from the 12/8 Path band. Appropriate for bikers of all ages and skill levels. Be as competitive or non-competitive as you like, everyone will have fun!”
