Uniland Development purchased a chunk of property in Allentown today. The company now owns the former Nazareth Nursing Home at 279 North Street, just east of Symphony Circle. Catholic Health System closed the facility in late 2007. The 63,661 sq.ft., two-story building was built in 1950 and is within the Allentown Historic Preservation District. The purchase also included 298 Summer, a flag lot that contains a portion of the complex’s parking lot.
Uniland paid $1 million for the 2.94-acre site that was owned by the Nazareth Home of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception.
The company isn’t saying exactly what’s in store for the building and property but it will have a residential future. From a Uniland statement:
This site is ideal for city living to take advantage of the excellent walkability of the area. Being in Elmwood Village and bordering Allentown, this location provides walking and biking access to dozens of shops, restaurants, cultural activities and services. With the anticipated influx of medical professionals to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Uniland sees a need for appropriate residential space. Uniland has grown its residential portfolio since the Avant condos with completion of The Glen at Sheridan Meadows in Amherst and, just today, broke ground on The Glen at Perinton Hills in the Rochester suburb of Fairport.
If Uniland goes the demo route, the path should not be too complicated. From preservation guru Mike Puma:
The building is deemed non-contributing in the nomination so it should be a much easier path towards demolition.
