In 2014, nearly 140,000 Americans were diagnosed with colon cancer, and more than 50,000 died from the disease. Those are sickening statistics, especially when you stop to consider that the disease is preventable through education and timely check-ups.
Each year, hundreds of runners/walkers join together to participate in the Undy Run/Walk 5K, an event that was started by the Colon Cancer Alliance. By bringing critical awareness to the issue, it is hoped that more people will openly talk about the fundamentals of this preventable cancer. By donning undies of all sizes and colors, coming up with a clever team name, while running/walking at Delaware Park, there is certainly a playful aspect to this extremely serious issue.
“The creative boxers and witty team names bring a light-heartedness to the Undy Run/Walk, but it’s serious business,” says Adina Frazier, Colon Cancer Alliance Special Events Director. “Through partnerships like the one we enjoy with the Independent Health Foundation we’re able to have an even bigger impact on the Buffalo community and get one step closer to accomplishing our mission. What’s better than that?”
The Undy Run/Walk 5K is family friendly and even includes an all-ages 1 mile Fun Run, free for participants five years and younger. The Undy Run/Walk concludes with a ceremony to honor those who have battled the disease.
