This is what I love about Sugar City. The DIY music and arts collective is always coming up with some outrageous events that go beyond the norm. For instance, take this upcoming film screening of Elektro Moskva (The Story of Soviet Electronic Music). When you think about the Soviet Union, I bet that electronic music is not the first thing that comes to mind. The film, by Elena Tikhonova and Dominik Spritzendorfer, essentially recounts the history of electronic music in the USSR, delving into the work of Leon Theremin (inventor of the the Theremin – the world’s first electronic instrument), and the work of other artists as they created some of the most warped electronic sounds amidst an incredibly stifling environment.
In a country where nothing works, and pieces must be scraped together to allow them to function – not to mention the creativity and brainpower needed to even conceive and then create the end product.
Come visit Sugar City in their new home on Niagara Street, and see why this resilient grassroots outfit continues to push the boundaries in Buffalo, with avant garde programming that continues to morph and grow right along with its host.
“An electromagnetic fairy tale about the spies, scavengers, and synthesizers who electrified the iron curtain.”
For anyone into the creation of electronic music and sounds, this is a must see and hear. The experimentation that we see in this film goes beyond the realms of the imagination.
