If I really had to side with one or the other, I believe that I would take The Smiths over The Cure. Years ago that might have been a different story, but as The Cure continued to go mainstream, The Smiths signature sounds are thankfully frozen in time, never to be subjected to the pitfalls of pop.
Even as Morrissey emerged from The Smiths’ cocoon, his solo career paid tribute to those same “troubled” sounds that never ventured anything near a song the likes of “Friday I’m in Love”, the sugary pill that The Cure served up to radio listeners around the globe.
Regardless of your preference for either of these timeless bands, if you love one of them… or even both of them… then Transmission Dance Party has an event for you.
It’s the 12th Annual Cure vs The Smiths party, and it takes place this Saturday at Iron Works (formerly hosted at Mohawk Place). “For a decade Transmission hosted this event at Mohawk Place,” said promoter Jason Draper. “But when it closed (since reopened) we moved it to Iron Works. It worked great last year and since it’s a bigger room we’re holding it there again this year. From 9:30pm-10:30pm we will be playing other bands covering the two being honored and then from 10:30pm-2:30am or so we’ll be playing nothing but the two bands back and forth.”
$5 cover ($2 with Sabres ticket stub). 21+
