Domino’s pizza will soon be delivering downtown. The pizza giant is opening a location at 189 Delaware Avenue across from Avant. It will join two other Domino’s in the area, both in Amherst.
While Buffalo has a bevy of locally owned pizza joints, Domino’s is landing in what appears to be a winning location. The Delaware Avenue site is within blocks of four existing downtown hotels including the Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites, Comfort Inn, and Hyatt and is close to the West Village, Allentown, near East side, Waterfront Village, Chippewa strip, and the ever-expanding downtown residential neighborhood. Two additional hotels within a block are underway: the Curtiss boutique hotel on W. Huron and the Westin at 250 Delaware.
Domino’s started out small – with just one store in 1960. However, in 1978 the 200th Domino’s store opened. By 1983 there were 1,000 Domino’s stores and 5,000 in 1989. Today, there are over 11,250 stores – including more than 5,000 outside the United States in 75 international markets. Domino’s had global retail sales of over $8.0 billion in 2013, comprised of nearly $3.8 billion in the U.S. and over $4.2 billion internationally.
189 Delaware is the former location of Delaware Copy & Repro Center. Avalon Document Services purchased Delaware Copy in 2013 and consolidated both companies at Avalon’s 721 Main Street facility. Current owner AQ Khan LLC purchased the 189 Delaware property last June for $140,000.
