On Friday, February 6 and Friday, February 13, 2015 the Queen City Roller Girls flat track roller derby league will be skating at their new home along the Buffalo River. This marks a giant milestone for the league, and is anticipated to be a real game changer for Buffalo.
On those two days, the Queen City Roller Girls (QCRG) will skate publicly, for the first time in the city of Buffalo, at their new home within the RiverWorks complex (see 2015 bout schedule).
While the complex might not be fully completed at that time, the occasion will signal the opening of what I believe will come to be the city’s hottest new waterfront attraction. The beautiful thing about RiverWorks is that there are indoor and outdoor components, myriad year round activities to either spectate, and/or participate in, and multiple eating and dining scenarios (with a brewery and other amenities to come).
Already a number of events are popping up at the site, including the upcoming Madd Tiki Winter Luau and Love Fest.
Even when there are no festivals or events taking place at RiverWorks, the complex will be alive with the sounds of skaters as they take to the flat track for ongoing practices and heavy hitting national bouts. In order to get the season underway, QCRG is preparing to launch a number of “Icebreaker” games, intended to allow fans to get a glimpse of the skaters in a preview capacity.
On Friday, February 6, the 3-time defending champion Nickel City Knockouts will take on the Suicidal Saucies (rematch of the 2014 Championship). And on Friday, February 13, the Devil Dollies will play the Alley Kats.
See QCRG recruitment and tryouts. Also check out the league on Facebook.
*Games will start at 7:30 PM, with doors opening at 7:00 PM. Tickets for this special preview are available at a discounted rate of $10 and at the door only. Tickets for the remainder of the 2015 season, including season and team packages, will be announced soon and available at http://www.qcrg.net/tickets.
Also, don’t miss the Queen City Junior Roller Girls, scheduled to play at RiverWorks for a Triple Header on February 15, 2015 (see Facebook event).
