Just Buffalo Literary Center Presents 7th Annual Members’ Contest & Reading

Author: Robin Jordan

Since 2007, Just Buffalo Literary Center has celebrated some of the world’s most influential writers through their BABEL lecture series. Once a year, though, JBLC takes a moment to shed light inward, celebrating the incredible writers in our community and within their member ranks.

This year marks Just Buffalo Literary Center’s 7th Annual Members’ Contest and Reading. Judged by poet and teaching artist Sherry Robbins, this year’s contest focuses on poetry and is open to Just Buffalo members in good standing at the time of submission.

Contest entries are still being accepted and must be emailed by 5:00pm on Thursday, February 5th, 2015. Contestants may join Just Buffalo by visiting the Just Buffalo website (www.justbuffalo.org) or by sending a check for $40 along with their entry. Check out JBLC’s website for specific contest submission guidelines.

Winners of the contest will be announced at the Members’ Reading on Thursday, February 26th, 2015 at 7:30pm at the Just Buffalo Writing Center, 468 Washington @ Mohawk, 2nd floor. During the event, two awards will be presented: a Judge’s Award, chosen by Sherry Robbins; and an Audience Award, to be voted on by the audience present at the reading. Audience Award and Judge’s Award winners will each receive a $50 cash prize, gift certificate from Talking Leaves Books, publication in The Public, and a certificate of recognition from Just Buffalo Literary Center.

As contest judge Sherry Robbins calls, “Enter now and bring your friends to the reading to cheer you on.”

Sometimes the authors at Buffalo Rising work on collaborative efforts in order to cover various events and stories. These posts can not be attributed to one single author, as it is a combined effort. Often times a formation of a post gets started by one writer and passed along to one or more writers before completion. At times there are author attributions at the end of one of these posts. Other times, “Buffalo Rising” is simply offered up as the creator of the article. In either case, the writing is original to Buffalo Rising.
