It’s not often that you get a chance to see a bird’s eye view of a cupola being placed on top of a massive historic structure. Thankfully Broadway Fillmore Alive managed to capture a remarkable video of Corpus Christi’s north tower cupola being raised into the air and gently placed into position atop its splendid home. The video was captured by drone pilot Glenn McLaughlin.
The cupola was replaced on the iconic East Side structure on October 30, 2015. Along with repairs to the north tower’s stonework, the rehab project rang in at $612,000.
What is especially interesting about this project, is that when the original cupola was removed, inside the cross was found a bundle of hundreds of letters that had been written by parish school children at the time that the original cupola was fashioned atop the structure (the same is true on the cross that topped the south cupola – over 300 total between the two stashes). Unfortunately, the letters had gone the way of the tired and decrepit dome, leaving behind nothing more than a heap of waterlogged paper.
When the new dome was added in October, hundreds of new letters were included inside, which will be properly safeguarded until the next time that the cupola is hoisted away, in need of repair or replacement.
