Two of Americas favorite culinary indulgences are coming to Elmwood Avenue – hamburgers and hotdogs.
At the corner of Bidwell Parkway, Hero Certified Burgers is on the way (see here), while closer to Forest Louie’s Texas Red Hots is busy remodeling a storefront, which was formerly Saigon Café (see here). From what I understand, this will be Louie’s’ seventh location in the area. The business has been around since 1967, getting its start on Bailey Avenue on the city’s East Side.
While Louie’s is known for its signature Texas red hots, the restaurant is actually considered Greek-American, and even serves up breakfasts that range from souvlaki to a Texas Hot omelette (breakfast is always available). For lunch patrons can expect items that include burgers, egg sandwiches, and tuna melts – perfect for the nearby college community. Soups and salads are also offered, as are some one offs such as the veggie burger, Polish sausage sandwich, thick fried bologna, fish on egg roll, chopped sirloin, and egg salad. Louie’s also offers kids meals, old fashioned milkshakes and desserts.
The Louie’s style “formula” has been working on Elmwood for years and years, and is almost considered a “no brainier” when you look at the mix of families and college students that live nearby. When the workers are finished with the Elmwood build-out, it will certainly be an attention-grabber on the street. Other Louie’s locations appear to be “larger than life”, and stick out by broadcasting the memorable billboard-esque signs that you can already see being framed out at this newest location.
