Coit House for Sale: Staging by Ziggy Starfish

Buffalo’s oldest house (circa 1815) is on the market. The Federal style Coit House, originally located at the Inner Harbor before it was moved to 414 Virginia Street, might not be the most glamorous house in the city by today’s standards, but if you’re into historic architecture, the house is a real charmer (see history of the house).

When potential buyers and curiosity seekers pay a visit to the Coit House this weekend (open to the public), they will find that many of the rooms have been staged by Allentown antique and vintage store, Ziggy Starfish.

Ziggy Starfish Proprietor Dave Zeigler took me through the residence, which many think would also make a great gallery or museum, to show me the staging underway. Once Dave is done, the decor will become a series of vignettes, playing off the intrinsic character of the house.

If you attend the showing this weekend, be sure to walk to the third floor of the house, where you will find 1.5′ wide plank floors, which is such a rarity that many people will never have a chance to see again, no matter how many beautiful homes they visit.

House owner Gerhardt Yaskow tells me that he is interested in selling the house to someone who understands the historic nature of the dwelling. Someone who will occasionally open it to the public (via tours) so that people can see the innate beauty. He even hinted that he would entertain a lower offer over a higher one if the buyer fit the bill, and was interested in some sort of public component.

A price on the Coit House has not yet been determined, but will be by this weekend.
