Visual Archaeology Workshop: Shooting Silo City

If you’re  photographer in Buffalo, there are plenty of sites to go to capture the breathtaking images that you desire. At the same time, there are certain places that are harder to get access to, many of which are industrial places where “No Trespassing” signs are par for the course.

In order to help people gain access to Silo City, photographer Mark Maio (Visual Archaeology Workshop) has worked out a deal with the site operators to host photography workshops. The workshops give people the chance to get up “close and personal” with the elevators and silos in a way that is just not possible for most. “Over the past four years I have been running, in partnership with Rick Smith at Silo City, a series of photography workshops concentrating on Buffalo’s industrial heritage and the architecture of the grain elevators,” said Maio. “This past June I had 25 attendees from across the country and I have another workshop scheduled for the first weekend in October.”

“All the uniqueness and excitement of shooting in a slot canyon in the southwest, with the convenient location of Buffalo, New York. For anyone who is fascinated by urban decay and architectural monumentality, a weekend shooting at Silo City is not to be missed”. – Michael Reichmann, The Luminous Landscape

I learned so much from everyone and I truly enjoyed myself. I was part of an intrepid group of explorers who were complete strangers at first, but became immediate friends in the search for that photographic “connection”. – Suzanne Musho
