Some of the recent progress that we are seeing at the Outer Harbor is actually what we are not seeing. For years Fuhrmann Boulevard was lined with a bunch of “unavoidable” advertising that was unpleasant to look at and interrupted the sight lines of the lake.
Earlier this summer, the roadway along the Outer Harbor was cleaned up in a big way, and I’m sure that people notice the difference.
I suppose that there is a time and a place for a billboard – some of the new electronic billboards look decent, and not outdated like their older counterparts. But then again, they can also be obtrusive when planted in the wrong place.
Personally, I can’t stand the billboard placement at the corner of Elmwood and Allen (on top of the Cantina Loco building). There’s a lame one on Hertel too. When a billboard is too “in your face” and detracts from an otherwise pleasant urban vista, then it really shouldn’t be there at all.
