New [BN] Mural Casts A Nice Light on Elmwood

Another mural has sprung up on Elmwood Avenue in-between Bird and Forest Avenues. This time the Buffalo News has taken a crack at adding some character to the street, with a somewhat simpler approach to the medium. It just goes to show that sometimes artists don’t have to over think the project and go hog wild. By incorporating bits and pieces of the building design (i.e. playing with the windows), a fun result is the outcome. In this case, the artist (Kevin M. Curthoys – KMCDesign) has added some 3-dimensional imagery that makes the mural ‘pop’.

I especially love the old street light. Elmwood unfortunately still suffers from being brought down by the appearance of ugly, highway style, cobra neck street standards (street lights). At least we can now look at this painted image and see what the appropriate scale commercial lightscape will (cross your fingers) one day look like. The fact that The City has still not replaced the Robert Moses-esque street lighting on Elmwood is a bit embarrassing at this stage in the game. Thankfully the mural depicts what’s blatantly missing.
