We can thank our lucky (and our local) stars that for the 12th year in a row, Music is Art will be held in Buffalo. After last year’s torrential rain throughout the day, which plummeted key beer and merchandise sales, there was a question as to whether MiA would be able to financially recuperate. With the assistance of public support, via fundraisers, as well as help from others waiting in the wings, the festival will be back, bringing with it all of the killer local bands, acts, artists and other talents that have captivated us from year to year*.
“The best part of the day are the things that just happen and aren’t planned” said Music is Art executive director, Tracy Shattuck. “From street performers to jugglers to break-dancers, they might not have an official slot to perform on stage, but it doesn’t stop them from showing up. That is the vibe we’re trying to create here, everyone is welcome to not only attend, but to play a role in this creative community event.”
As much as the MiA festival is dedicated to spotlighting the talents of Buffalo musicians, this summer a special “outsider” has been invited to participate in the mix – “Shonen Knife” from Osaka, Japan. “Japanese rock has found an unlikely home in Buffalo,” said festival founder, Robby Takac of the GooGoo Dolls. “With several DVDs and albums being produced, recorded, and released here over the last 8 years.”
Get ready to gear up for the 2014 MiA festival – an event that has persevered through more than most could ever possibly imagine thanks to the tenacity and the devotion of Takac and his MiA crew.
