The Mirror Room is heading back to the Albright-Knox. After being on tour around the US, one of Buffalo’s prized possessions will be back home, and open for public viewing.
Growing up in Buffalo, a visit to The Mirror Room, officially called Room No. 2, was always an occasion that I looked forward to. Just stepping inside the box was enough to transport me and my imagination to another world, filled with mystery and intrigue. To be able to see myself standing in such an illusion of eternity was breathtaking, mesmerizing and dizzying.
After five years of being on the road, Lucas Samaras’s Room No. 2 (1966) will fill the void that has been missing for what seemed an eternity. A trip to the Albright-Knox has not been the same since its departure. Even as an adult I find that the work of art is able to transport me back to a time when the world was a bit more carefree.
If you look closely at the photo (above) you can see that there is a mirrored table and mirrored chair inside the room, which is not usually part of the exhibit.
On June 20, 2014, from 7pm-11pm, a fundraising event will be held called “Mirror Mirror”, which will second as a welcome home celebration for this iconic interactive work of art. For those of us who hold The Mirror Room near and dear to our hearts, this is a celebration of fantastical proportions. Other works by Samaras will be on view at the event – the exhibit is titled Reflections.
On the evening of the opening, there will be a number of cirque-style attractions to go along with the fanfare, as well as a visit from this pop-up “MirrorMirror” structure that was featured here on BRO.
