Hot Mama’s Canteen Set To Open

Hot Mama’s Canteen is ready to bring the heat Saturday, June 21. The newest addition to Black Rock opens its doors at noon this Saturday to serve food and drinks to those who want to check out the 17th annual Discover Amherst Street Festival.

Hot-Mamas-opens-Buffalo-NY-1The bar and restaurant is being opened by Valerie Meli, owner of local hot sauce company Headstone Heat, and Jeff Davis, formerly of Allen Street Hardware Café. Together these two are bringing their funky Allentown vibe to a unique intersection in Black Rock, where Military Road meets Amherst Street (learn more here).

A limited menu will be available Saturday for those who want to grab some grub with their drinks (see full menu below). According to Davis the goal for Hot Mama’s menu is to offer “comfort food with a twist…stuff that’s simple, that’s classic but that not a lot of people do themselves.”

“We want everything you have to eat here to be familiar, but just different enough for you to think about why you had never thought to do that before,” said Davis.

The dining space itself offers a very homey vibe with assorted flatware, Buffalo china plates and miscellaneous condiment holders. The bar space is clean, classy and beautifully finished and there is a small space for a stage between the dining and bar area offering a bit of separation between those drinking and those dining. Much of the work done inside was accomplished by using materials found at the location.

The dining area features a shuffleboard table that, when they first arrived in their new building, was just sitting on top of the bar. Meli filled me in on the shuffleboard table, telling me that she has traced it to bars up and down Amherst Street from Sportsmens to Hillikers and now she is proud to have that piece of Black Rock Bar history refurbished and available for her customers to use at any time when the establishment is open.

The bar opens at noon and the parade starts at the same time. The first band starts at 2pm and the afternoon line up includes the wonderful Fredtown Stompers, Ann Philippone, and Dr Jazz and The Jazz Bugs. Then in the evening if you’re just starting out (or ready for more), at 10:30pm Lady Lush and The Vinyls will be playing some soul.
