Over the years, we have asked ourselves countless times, how we can help to preserve our local architecture. Often times we are left facing the wrecking ball before a plan can be devised to save a building. Thankfully that is not the case with Corpus Christi church. At this very moment, the church has embarked upon a crowdfunding campaign in order to restore its north bell tower. The goal is a mere $30,000. If the goal is reached, then New York State will kick in an additional $400,000 to complete the restoration.
Not long ago, work was completed to safeguard the church’s south tower, which means that once the north tower work is complete, the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood will have an architectural gem that is safe from the elements. Over the last decade, over a million dollars has been secured to protect and rebuild this church and its art treasures. Restoring the south tower would be the icing on the cake. If the funds are are raised, work could begin as early as this summer.
There are 14 days left to achieve this goal. It’s hard to believe that we almost lost this church. Thanks to the fortitude of a people, who care deeply about their neighborhood, the iconic beauty of the church, religion, and architecture, Corpus Christi will remain a beacon on the city’s East Side.
