City of Night is almost upon us. This event does a stellar job summing up what the Buffalo experience is all about.
The setting is Silo City. The characters are eclectic artists and visionaries from all over the region. The guests arrive to discover a hybrid world of old industrial relics that have been funkified to create a colorful wonderland filled with art installations and projections, created by poets, musicians and myriad artists. Visitors arrive by foot, bike, water taxi and skateboard (even though skateboards will be few and far between this year due to the recent road work on Ohio Street).
City of Night invites you to immerse yourself in an evening of art, history, culture, and sustainability. This is the third consecutive year that the event is being held. In 2012 approximately 3500 visitors arrived to check out the scene. Last year that number jumped to 12,000.
“There is a lot to discover this year at our third annual CITY of NIGHT event, including new spaces to explore, a light garden of installations, community art projects, an artist catalogue and other merchandise, as well as VIP Preview Night”, said Dana Saylor, CITY of NIGHT event coordinator. “Emerging Leaders in the Arts Buffalo (ELAB) is proud to coordinate this massive event that has—in just two short years—transformed so many people’s perception of Buffalo’s art and industrial heritage. As event organizers, we look forward to deepening that perception year after year. Many feel that the innovative spirit of these early twentieth century giants can morph into a kind of laboratory for the arts and industry. As such, modern visionaries are utilizing the massive spaces for art installations, urban sport, and heritage tourism.”
In 2014 City of Night promises to be just as interesting as ever, by including “installations and projections in/outside the grain elevators, live performance in the form of sound art, theater, and dance, an art fair, roving musicians, dramatic interactive experiences, food trucks, beer and wine tent, and bike valet.”
City of Night is hosted by ELAB. It is a placemaking event like no other in the city of Buffalo.
